Museum of Sarakatsanic Tradition
In Aisymi, 23 km from Alexandroupolis, the Association of Sarakatsanaion of Evros created a place where the rich material collected from the life and tradition of the Sarakatsans is exhibited. The building was granted by the Municipality of Alexandroupolis, which was renovated, expanded and organized, opening as a museum in 2009.
In the collection, which comes mainly from donations of Sarakatsans, the visitor can find authentic uniforms, both male and female, capes, diapers, aprons, aprons, rattles, trouvades, trays, gioums, bells, bells, linen and in general a treasure that highlights the tradition and everyday life of Sarakatsans, as well as a number of old photographs from the early 20th century.
At the same time, a little further north, in Leptokarya, the Association has created a Traditional Sarakatsaniko Settlement, which represents the living conditions of the Sarakatsans and has all the characteristics of a traditional cellar. In the site, which is located in an area of great beauty and is ideal for a nature excursion, the visitor will get to know even better the details of traditional living, but will also enjoy the fresh air and a walk under the beech trees.
