Natural History Museum of Alexandroupolis
Natural History Museum of Alexandroupolis
The presence of rich habitats and protected areas around Alexandroupolis led to the idea of creating a site that would help in the recording, classification and presentation of the ecosystems observed in the natural environment around the city. The Natural History Museum was built in the settlement of Platanotopos Maistrou, in a spot that is overrun with greenery and is in itself a refreshing walk in nature, just minutes from the city centre.
Along with the periodic thematic events, the Museum presents in four sections the flora and fauna of the area, as well as the interaction with humans and the species with each other. The introductory room provides information on the concept of biodiversity and ecological characteristics in Greece and Evros, as well as the areas protected by international conventions in Thrace.
Then, the visitor is informed specifically about the biodiversity of Evros, with the help of multimedia and is directed to the room where the different types of ecosystems are presented. The marine ecosystems of the Thracian Sea, the wetlands of the Evros Delta and the numerous lakes and rivers of the region, the terrestrial ecosystems of the Forest of Dadia, Samothrace and the mountains of the region.
The human element and the history of man in relation to the environment is the last "stop", with the help of presentations, photographs and multimedia. The visitor completes the collection of data on what he needs to know about the natural history of the region, leaves with a very different, clearly broader knowledge of the world in which he lives and operates and can better understand the importance of the harmonious living of species.
