Historical Museum of Alexandroupolis

The Historical Museum of Alexandroupolis was founded after many years of efforts by the "Association of Archaeophiles and Cultural Heritage of Evros Prefecture". It is housed in a three-storey, modern building in the city centre, opposite the Town Hall. It was inaugurated in 2011 with the presentation of its permanent exhibition.

The museum exhibits a remarkable collection of paintings, mainly by local artists, and hosts several works by Harikleia Hadjisavva-Fotiou on behalf of the Municipality of Alexandroupolis. The library has more than 1,000 books on the history of Alexandroupolis and Thrace, while the rich archival material includes newspapers and magazines, photographs and old objects.

Two large collections make up the permanent exhibition of the Museum. The collection of the folklorist Eleni Filippidi, on the Sarakatsans of Thrace and the nomadic life of Sarakatsan women, and the exhibition on the history of the city, where visitors will travel from the creation of the settlement to the construction of the railway and the port, to the architecture and generally to every spiritual, economic and political aspect of Alexandroupolis through the years.
