Castles Avanta and Potamos
Castles Avanta and Potamos
Around the settlement of Avantas, about 10 km from Alexandroupolis, two medieval castles still watch over the area from the hills to the plain. A short distance apart, the Castle of Avanta and the Castle of Potamos retain basic elements of their structure and are available for exploration, combined with the exercise required to approach them.
The Castle of Avada is relatively inaccessible, hidden on the cerulean hill where it was erected centuries ago. After a twenty-minute climb from the west side, one can reach the ruins, where the magnificent gate, two towers and ramparts are preserved, from which the visitor can observe what the guards of the area saw at the time when the roads to and from Constantinople were full of travellers and the protection of the settlements required the construction of such buildings.
On the provincial road leading from Alexandroupoli to Avantas, the Potamos Castle is found, with three impressive square towers and a double row of walls. It is estimated to have been constructed in the 13th century by Genoese conquerors.
