Roman Baths of Traianoupolis
Roman Baths of Traianoupolis
About 12 kilometres northeast of Alexandroupolis was the Roman city of Traianoupolis, which was founded in the 2nd century AD by the emperor Trajan and flourished for more than a millennium. There are thermal springs on the site, with modern facilities that accommodate visitors for treatment or relaxation, which probably played a role in the choice of the area for the founding of the city.
In its current ruins, the 'Hana' thermal baths building stands out, an arched rectangular building from the 4th century that also served as a guest house, some adjacent vaulted buildings, bathhouses, remains of a church and the 14th century Muslim tepee of Isiklar.
