Catholic Church of St Joseph

The settlement of a large number of Catholics in the city at the end of the 19th century created the need for the construction of their own place of worship. Initially it was French, Italians and Austrians who arrived to work on the construction of the railway line that would connect Alexandroupolis (then "Dedeagats") with Andrianoupolis and the new port, but also consulate employees who established consulates and companies that opened branches due to the heavy traffic in the city, which was becoming an important commercial and transit centre of the region.

Construction of St. Joseph's Church began in 1896 and was completed five years later, inaugurated in 1901, to serve the religious needs of the Catholic community. The three-aisled Church, with two rows of green marble columns, is also the only Catholic Church in Western Thrace. Impressive in construction, with carved stone, it has rich interior decoration and is an important visual and architectural monument. Due to its excellent acoustics, it also hosts cultural events.

A Divine Liturgy is held several times a year, under the auspices of the Lazarists of Thessaloniki, to whom the church belongs since 1981.
