The fascinating Evros Delta
The fascinating Evros Delta
The Evros River Delta is a habitat of great ecological importance, as it hosts large populations of rare species of flora and fauna, with "protagonists" the winged inhabitants that watch over it from above: 304 species of birds have been counted, the most important being palm wings (flamingos), swans and very large populations of ducks, while roseate pelicans, steelhead, chickadees, chickadees, silverbacks, lesser spotted egrets and the very rare leptoidea have also been recorded.
The estuary of Evros and the labyrinthine formations of the waters, the ever-changing shores, the waterfalls and their interaction with the birds, reptiles, fish and mammals of the area are also a spectacle of unimaginable beauty. The Delta receives crowds of visitors every day, as a walk through one of Europe's most important wetlands is an experience of a lifetime, both for the visual feast of colours, formations and river and riparian creatures, and for the awe at the power of nature to encompass such extensive, complex ecosystems within a limited area such as the point where the Evros River ends its approximately 530km journey.
The organized tour of the Delta starts from the Evros Delta Information Centre, located near Traianoupolis, 14 km from Alexandroupolis. It has an exhibition area, a screening room, a shop and a guesthouse for those who want to stay there, next to nature. It provides pre-trip briefing on the river, by specially trained employees who know the area perfectly. From the Information Centre, visitors organize how to visit the Delta (minibuses, boats), while expert eco-guides can help in choosing their preferred route. Tourists can also choose hiking or cycling routes from the Evros Delta Information Centre to observe the Evros wetlands as they wish.
