The Archaeological Museum of Alexandroupolis was officially inaugurated in June 2022 and hosts findings from the region of Thrace. Its construction began in 2013 and it received its first visitors five years later, with the organization of temporary exhibitions and other events. The permanent exhibition tells the history of the region from prehistoric times (6th millennium BC) to Roman times (4th century AD), divided into three thematic sections: The coastal zone, the hinterland and the burial mounds of the Hebridean plain.
The museum contains more than 1,000 ancient objects from each period. Clay, glass, bronze and silver vases, burial stelae, sculptures, coins, jewellery, figurines, tools, objects of everyday use recovered by archaeological excavation from the archaeological sites around Alexandroupolis, Evros and the wider region of Thrace are presented in a thematically and chronologically organized manner. Videos and digital multimedia applications accompany the visitor's tour of the millennia that preceded them and the cultures that left their mark on the region.
