Ancient Zoni

The ancient city of Zoni was the most important of the "Perea of Samothrace", a series of fortress-cities created by settlers from Samothrace in the 7th century BC, on the coast of the area where today's Alexandroupolis and its coastline to the west is located. The ruins of the Zone, near the settlement of Mesimvria, 20 km from Alexandroupolis, are an archaeological site of great importance, where systematic excavations have been carried out since 1966. A large number of finds and especially coins have come to light, which helped and still help in understanding the ancient history of the area, the cultures that inhabited it and the interaction between them.

The visitor has the opportunity to see within the archaeological site the fortification wall, which protected the city strategically in combination with the natural elements (streams, hills, sea), the settlement of the Hellenistic period where the boundaries of the houses and public buildings are clearly visible, the simple Sanctuary of Demeter and the Temple of Apollo, which is characterized by archaeologists as the only identified archaic sanctuary of Apollo in all of Thrace.
