The unique variety of olive trees cultivated in Makri, in the olive grove with trees up to 2,500 years old, produces a special oil, internationally recognized as an olive oil of Protected Designation of Origin. In the historic olive grove of the region, 220,000 olives, cultivated by hundreds of producers, produce annually from 1,000 to 3,000 tons of olive oil, which "travels" in the homemade recipes of the region, the taverns of the city, the traditional dishes, shaping the gastronomy of Alexandroupolis with uniqueness.
The special taste is perceived by the visitor who will taste local specialties and fresh fish and enhances the enjoyment of going out to eat in the city and the surrounding tourist areas. Several cuisines are upgrading themselves by declaring that they use Makri olive oil, while the same uniqueness is also found in the local olive tree, which accompanies the oil in salads, dishes and on its own as a snack for any hour for lovers of this particular fruit.
