Mountain bike in the habitats of Circe
Mountain bike in the habitats of Circe
The forest that lies south of Kirki, a village at an altitude of about 200 meters and 25 km from Alexandroupolis, is a very important set of habitats, mainly for birds of prey. The particularity of the relief with gorges, steep slopes, ravines and very dense vegetation offers shelter to several migratory and wintering species and rare birds such as the golden eagle, the vulture, the buffalo, the black stork and the black stork can be found in the wooded area.
Although the impressive crags and cliffs, covering large stretches between the lush valleys alternating with cliffs in the landscape, are a challenge for experienced hikers, the marked trails and forest roads are ideal for mountain biking. Mountain bike enthusiasts will find a "track" of rare difficulty (but also beauty) that will reward them, especially in the autumn months when the forest looks like a painting, changing colour every few metres.
To the east of Circe and on the boundaries of the biotope forest are the abandoned mines, 19th and 20th century buildings. The melancholic remnants of an era of prosperity of the village and the region, but also of environmental destruction that took place until a few decades ago, waiting for nature to balance it with its incomprehensible power and beauty.
