The intoxicating forest of Sykorrachi
The intoxicating forest of Sykorrachi
Sykorrachi is built at an altitude of 200 meters, on the slopes of the forested mountain range that starts from the village and stretches to the river Evros. On the edge of the plain of Komotini, 7 km from Sapes and 36 km from Alexandroupolis, it is one of the most beautiful, picturesque settlements of the region, with traditional architecture from the first inhabitants who had come as refugees from Asia Minor and Pontus, sparse houses and ideal environmental conditions. It is particularly known for its local meat products.
The forest that extends east of the village is dense, with a rich variety of fauna and "drowned" in vegetation. Landscaped recreation areas welcome visitors and hikers who wish to walk the mountainous route, which remains just as fascinating if you cross it by car, starting from Sykorrachi in an easterly direction, passing through Kirki and ending in Avantas and Alexandroupolis, having covered a distance of 20 km of provincial, mountainous road full of greenery and wonderful images at every turn.
But you should definitely walk at the beginning of the forest, in Sykorrachi, to taste the intoxicating aromas of the herbs, thyme and mint, which are the most characteristic "souvenir". The same route, from Alexandroupoli to Sykorrachi via Avantas and Kirki, will give you the opportunity to stop for lunch in the village before returning, and taste the famous local meats and dairy products served in the taverns of Sykorrachi.
