The windmills of Melia
The windmills of Melia
Once, centuries ago, they used to grind cereals and supply the whole region with flour. Today, the four of them stand on the hilltop in the Melia forest of beech and pine trees, to remind us of their importance in a bygone era, before the industrial revolution. And they beautify the already impressive landscape surrounding them, in the clearing where they have been restored.
The windmills of Melia, a small village 28 km northeast of Alexandroupolis and 7 km from Feres, are a special sight. They attract visitors who wish to photograph them and be photographed in their shade, families with children who have a rare opportunity to travel through time with the iconic agricultural tool of the pre-industrial era as a background and to identify the stories with the buildings that played a huge role in the economy and food in the past centuries, but also excursionists who find it beautiful to have a picnic in the landscaped recreational area in their "courtyard", with benches, fountains and a barbecue area.
Along with the precious breaths offered by the forest path and the tranquillity of the semi-mountainous village, the cylindrical, symmetrical windmills built with bricks are ready to welcome any "modern Don Quixote" and take him back to the time when he had started his campaign of "conquest".
