Fifteenth of August in Panagia
The top religious event of the region takes place every 15th of August, on the day of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, in the Church of the Monastery of Panagia Kosmosoteira in Feres. The jewel of the town, one of the most important Byzantine monuments of the time in all of Greece, built in 1152 as the monastery's church and its only surviving building, welcomes thousands of believers as a religious reference point for Thracians everywhere.
The "feast of feasts and the festival of festivals", in the words of the Monastery's founder, Emperor Isaac Komnenos, includes the Archpriest's Vespers, the Litany of the icon of the Virgin Mary, the solemn Divine Liturgy and the established memorial service of the founder. Each year, Feres and its iconic church become the focus of religious pilgrimage, alongside the celebrations of the day in all the churches of the region.
